Retinopathy of prematurity

[edit]

The issue at hand is not the retinal detachment, it is typically scarring and oxidative damage caused by the excess generation of free oxygen radicals. Yes, retina detachment can occur but it is a possible outcome, not the primary one. The text should simply say- he was blind due to ROP. The added detail of "retinal detachment" adds unnecessary confusion. If necessary it could say, because of excess oxygen provided at birth, but the retinal detachment is unnecessary and potentially misleading.

Change, American to Ghanaian-American, he gained ghanaian citizenship recently 197.251.143.233 (talk) 08:12, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done I have boldly changed this, although I suspect it may provoke further discussion here. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:31, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This was last discussed in 2024: see Talk:Stevie Wonder/Archive 3#Citizenship. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:46, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The current edit listing Stevie Wonder as "Ghanaian American" is factually incorrect and misleading. Stevie Wonder is an American citizen by birth and only recently acquired Ghanaian citizenship on May 13, 2024, through a special program. If his dual citizenship status is to be mentioned, it should be phrased accurately, such as:
"American with Ghanaian citizenship (granted in 2024 through Ghana’s Right of Abode program)."
Otherwise, listing him as "Ghanaian American" implies a heritage-based identity that does not align with his background as a Black American. Given Wikipedia’s commitment to accuracy and neutrality, this should be corrected. Justfixingit (talk) 06:05, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We're talking about citizenship here, not ethnicity? So, just to be clear, does Wonder have Ghanaian citizenship or not? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:28, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Stevie Wonder has Ghanaian citizenship as of May 13, 2024. However, the term "Ghanaian American" typically refers to someone of Ghanaian descent or heritage who is American, not someone who recently acquired Ghanaian citizenship.
Stevie Wonder was born in the U.S. and is an American by birth. His Ghanaian citizenship was granted later in life through a special program, not through ancestral or cultural ties. To maintain accuracy, the nationality section should reflect this distinction. A more precise way to phrase it would be:
  • "American with Ghanaian citizenship (granted in 2024 through Ghana’s Right of Abode program)."*
This keeps it factual and in line with Wikipedia's commitment to accuracy.
Justfixingit (talk) 00:54, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, a section could be added to explain his Ghanaian citizenship. A more accurate way to phrase it in the infobox would be "American and Ghanaian citizen" rather than "Ghanaian American," as the latter implies ancestry or heritage from Ghana, which is not the case. Justfixingit (talk) 00:58, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your first suggestion looks a bit too wordy for the lead section, especially the opening sentence. But I think your second suggestion looks good. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:03, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree it's a bit wordy. My main point was to acknowledge how he obtained Ghanaian citizenship, as it was through a special program. Ghana has been encouraging descendants of enslaved people in the diaspora to apply for citizenship, typically if they can demonstrate ancestral ties. While I don’t know all the details of the specific requirements, it seems relevant and could be helpful for someone who might be interested in the program.
Thank you for understanding. It may seem like a small distinction, but that slight difference in wording is important in this case. That said, I agree—"American and Ghanaian citizenship" reads much smoother. Justfixingit (talk) 05:59, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it would be useful to give an explanation of the Ghanaian citizenship in the main body. I guess the inbox should just have the two countries linked, as normal. Thanks. p.s. talk of him moving to Ghana seems to have subsided. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:25, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is another attempt at the ethnocide of Black Americans.
Stevie Wonder is a Black American ethnically none of his parents were Ghanaian neither was any of his traceable ancestors. He is an American or Black American singer who acquired dual citizenship in Ghana. This is done intentionally to merge Black American culture with Africa. The Black American community have been actively pushing towards delineation and this is another form of ethnic erasure and theft. This is extremely disrespectful. 2601:644:4903:2360:D55F:F49A:D1BD:EE96 (talk) 07:40, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wonder is attempting "the ethnocide of Black Americans"? I'm surprised. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:55, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Black American Ethnocide

[edit]

Stevie Wonder is not Ghanaian. He's a Black American that has recently acquired a second citizenship in Ghana hence dual citizenship. Stevie Wonder is ethnically Black American not Ghanaian American. CWeatherford (talk) 19:30, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I thought he was now a Ghanaian citizen. Is the lead section supposed to reflect citizenship or ethnicity? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:52, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know CWeatherford and IP 2601 by any chance? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: Assuming the meaning of this is to change "Ghanaian-American" to just "American", request runs contrary to request accepted on February 4th, thus, consensus is required. —Sirdog (talk) 00:15, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

11 children

[edit]

Stevie Wonder expecting triplets, brings offspring-count to 11. [1]https://pagesix.com/2014/11/02/stevie-wonder-expecting-triplets-brings-offspring-count-to-11/?_ga=1.49684646.1426990527.1409487005 85.156.82.239 (talk) 21:53, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Even the Daily Mail says it's not true. So I think we might have to believe them this time. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:23, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
