Holland America Line N.V. (HAL) is an American cruise line operating as a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc. Founded in 1873 in Rotterdam, Netherlands as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company (NASM), the company operated regular transatlantic passenger and cargo services between Rotterdam and North America until 1971.[1] As a dedicated cruise line, the company expanded through multiple acquisitions including Westours in 1971, Windstar Cruises in 1988, and Home Lines in 1988.[1] In 1989, the company was acquired by Carnival Corporation.[2][3]

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the line's cruise ships carry the names of former transatlantic ocean liners operated by the company. The company's current flagship, Rotterdam (2020), is the seventh ship to bear such a name. As a major operator of cruises and overland tours throughout Alaska, the company owns multiple hotels throughout the state under the Holland America and Westmark names.[4] The line also offers an annual world cruise and cruises throughout the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, and Antarctica.

History

Early decades

Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (NASM).[5] Known colloquially and advertised as Holland-Amerika Lijn (HAL), the company was founded after the Rotterdam (I) operated its first transatlantic crossing to New York City in October of 1872.[1] In the United States, the line's ships actually terminated in Hoboken, New Jersey across the Hudson River from New York. Rotterdam (I) operated regular fifteen-day crossings with intermediate stops in Boulogne, France and Plymouth, United Kingdom until she sank in 1883.[6] By that time, the line's fleet had grown to include the passenger/cargo liners SS W.A. Scholten, SS P. Caland, SS Leerdam, and SS Edam. In 1885, Rotterdam (II) was acquired for the line's flagship service from Rotterdam to Hoboken. Rotterdam (II) operated the company's first pleasure cruise that same year, transiting the Kiel Canal to Copenhagen.[7] The next Rotterdam (III) followed in 1897 as the company expanded rapidly.[8] Statendam (I) of 1898 was the line's first ship of greater than 10,000 gross register tons (GRT) and by the line's 25th anniversary that year, the company had successfully carried over 400,000 immigrants from Europe to North America.[2][9]

Larger ships

A trio of large ships commissioned at Blohm+Voss entered service starting with SS Postdam in 1899, Rijndam (I) in 1901 and Noordam (I) in 1902.[10][11][12] With each ship measuring at greater than 12,000 GRT, this expansion increased the line's capacity significantly. In 1902, the independent line was acquired by the International Mercantile Marine Company (IMM). Owned by American industrialist J.P. Morgan as a price-fixing cartel, Holland America was approached by Harland & Wolff shipyard chairman William Pirrie in a transaction that did not disclose his IMM connections.[13]

As an unwitting member of IMM, the line introduced ever-larger ships including the 16,967 GRT Nieuw Amsterdam (I) of 1905 and the 24,129 GRT Rotterdam (IV) of 1908.[14][15] Both ships were built by Harland & Wolff.

First World War

Statendam (II) launched in July of 1914 and was due to be the line's largest ship at 32,120 GRT. However, World War I ignited one month later and the ship was requisitioned by the United Kingdom during outfitting at Harland & Wolff. Reconfigured as the Justicia, she became the largest troopship to serve in the war and was torpedoed by a U-boat in 1918. NASM eventually accepted compensation in the form of 60,000 tons of steel from the UK Government.[16] Dutch neutrality throughout the war did not spare multiple NASM ships, and the line lost five ships totalling over 30,000 GRT. Two German mines sank SS Eemdijk in 1915,[17] and in 1916 U-53 sank SS Blommersdijk.[18] In February of 1917 U-21 sank an entire Dutch convoy, including the SS Noorderdijk and SS Zaandijk.[19][20]

During the war, Dutch capitalists progressively purchased large shares of NASM from IMM and its subsidiaries. By 1917, these investors had successfully acquired half of IMM's shares in Holland America Line for over $3.5 million.[21] In 1918, American president Woodrow Wilson issued authorization to sieze 89 US-based Dutch ships under angary. Nine of the line's ships were seized by the United States Shipping Board, including Rijndam (I) who survived the war as a troopship under the name USS Rijndam.[22] Of these nine ships, only SS Ossterdijk was not returned after sinking due to a collision.[23]

Between the World Wars

Maasdam (I) and Edam (III) introduced steam turbine power to the Holland America fleet beginning in 1921, entering service as 8,800 GRT ships serving ports including Antwerp, Bilbao, Santander, Gijón, Vigo, and Havana en route to Tampico.[6][24] Volendam (I) and Veendam (I) followed from Harland & Wolff in 1922, both of which served the flagship transatlantic route to Hoboken via Southampton, Halifax, and Boulogne.[6]

Also in 1921, the line introduced its first motor ships with MS Dinteldijk and MS Drechtdijk. The 9,350 GRT refrigerated cargo ships had berths for up to 19 first class passengers and were followed by the larger MS Delftdijk and MS Damsterdijk in 1929 and 1930.[25][26][27][28]

Statendam (III) was commissioned at Harland & Wolff for completion in 1924, but Holland America Line ordered work to stop due to a lack of funds. After being laid up in an incomplete state for three years, the Dutch government granted NASM a loan for the ship's completion. After being towed to Wilton's Dok- en Werf Maatschappij in Schiedam, work was finally completed in 1929. Despite the onset of the Great Depression, Statendam (III) proved economical to run and served on the transatlantic run coupled with cruises to the Caribbean throughout the 1930s.[29]

By 1930, Holland America had expanded as far as the West Coast of the United States via the Panama Canal.[30] In collaboration with Royal Mail Lines, HAL's refrigerated cargo ships (indicated by the -dijk suffix) ran tandem routes with RML ships including the Lochmonar and Lochgoil. New destinations for the line on these services included London, Vancouver, Guayaquil, and Bermuda.[6]

In 1937, the line introduced Nieuw Amsterdam (II) as its new flagship. The 36,287 GRT ship cost the line 20 million guilders and immediately became the largest ship in the Dutch merchant fleet.[31] Variously hailed as the 'Darling of the Dutch' and a 'Ship of Tomorrow', Nieuw Amsterdam (II) earned prestige as the new ship of state and rivaled contemporaries such as the RMS Queen Mary, SS Normandie, and SS Rex.

Second World War

In World War II, Holland America lost thirteen ships totaling over 140,000 GRT. Early in the war during Dutch neutrality, MS Binnendijk and SS Spaarndam were lost to mines in 1939,[32][33] and MS Burgerdijk was sunk by U-48 in 1940.[34] During the German invasion of the Netherlands, multiple ships were burnt out during the battle for Rotterdam. Statendam (III), MS Boschdijk, and MS Dinteldijk were lost in the initial battle,[29] and MS Boschdijk was towed to the Baltic Sea as target practice for the Luftwaffe.[35] Eventually, MS Dinteldijk was scuttled in Rotterdam harbor as a blockship.[25]

After the establishment of the Dutch government-in-exile following the fall of the Netherlands, Holland America announced its intention to charter all of its transatlantic ships to the UK Government with the exception of Nieuw Amsterdam (II).[36] SS Pennland and SS Westernland were recquisitioned as troopships,[37][38] and Nieuw Amsterdam (II) eventually joined the war effort in October of 1940. At the conclusion of her service for the Allied forces, she had sailed over half a million miles around the world and transported over 400,000 military personnel as a troopship.

It is estimated that nearly 200 people were killed in wartime sinkings of NASM ships. The biggest loss of life occurred in November of 1942 when U-174 sank the combination cargo-passenger ship Zaandam (II), taking 135 souls.[39] Earlier, in January of 1941, 39 souls were lost when MS Beemsterdijk struck a mine.[40] More casualties occured during the sinking of MS Bliderdijk by U-38 in October of 1940,[41] U-564's sinking of Maasdam (III) in 1941,[42] and the sinking of SS Pennland during the German invasion of Greece. Another U-boat sinking occurred in September of 1942, when MS Breedijk was sunk by U-34.[43] Allied forces inflicted losses on board MS Drechtdijk during an air raid after she had been recquisitioned by German armed forces.[26]

Post-war era

After the war, HAL transported a great wave of immigrants from the Netherlands to Canada and elsewhere.[44] The Rotterdam to Hoboken route continued to serve Southampton, but by 1948 the port of Boulogne was still not in a condition to resume handling large ocean liners. Instead, from February 1948 Nieuw Amsterdam (II) started calling at Le Havre. At first she was the only HAL ship to do so. Veendam (II) made intermediate calls at Southampton only, and Noordam (II) and Westerdam (I) ran direct between Rotterdam and Hoboken.[45] By 1959, Holland America ships were also calling at Cobh, Quebec and Montreal. By 1963, they also served Bremerhaven.[6]

In 1958 Holland America launched Rotterdam (V), who quickly replaced Nieuw Amsterdam (II) as the new Dutch ship of state. Equipped for both two-class transatlantic crossings and one-class luxury cruising, the distinctive architecture and modern interior design of Rotterdam (V) placed her among the most innovative ships of her era including the SS France and the RMS Queen Elizabeth II. However, by the late 1960s, air travel began to displace transatlantic passenger services. Nieuw Amsterdam (II) operated the line's final scheduled transatlantic service in 1971 as the line pivoted towards cruising exclusively.[7] To coincide with this change, the line introduced a new dark blue hull color for the entire fleet and rebranded the line's house flag for the first time in its history.[7] In 1973, the line introduced its first purpose-built cruise ship with Prinsendam (I) and retired Nieuw Amsterdam (II). Through the line's 1971 acquisition of Westours, an Alaskan tour group, HAL's annual cruise schedule prioritized sailings throughout the Pacific Northwest and the company became known as Holland America Line-Westours. In 1978, the line reincorporated in the United States and moved its headquarters to Stamford, Connecticut.[7] New purpose-built cruise ships followed in the 1980s including running mates Nieuw Amsterdam (III) and Noordam (III). In 1988, the company diversified into luxury cruising through an acquisition of Windstar Cruises. In that same year, Holland America purchased the struggling Home Lines and renamed the MS Homeric to Westerdam (II). In 1989, Carnival Corporation purchased the entire organization for 1.2 billion guilders. The former Dutch owners used the proceeds of the sale to establish the HAL Trust and HAL Investments, both of which are owned by the van Der Vorm family.

US-based cruise line (1989–present)

In 1989, the Holland America Line was bought by Carnival Corp, thus becoming a US–owned cruise line headquartered in Seattle, Washington, United States.[77]

In the summer of 2011, Rotterdam did two transatlantic crossings, the first traditional transatlantic runs made by the line in more than 40 years.[citation needed]

Beginning in September 2012, Rotterdam was based year-round out of Rotterdam, sailing to Europe, the Caribbean, as well as Asia, before returning to more varied itineraries and home ports by 2016.[citation needed]

Amsterdam made annual "Grand Voyages" lasting more than 60 days, including a grand circle of the Pacific Ocean each fall and a World Voyage sailing around the world, usually ranging from January to April/May. The tradition continues today with various ships making these Grand Voyages several times a year.[78]

The line currently operates four different classes of ship: the R class, the Vista class, the Signature class, and the newest and largest Pinnacle class.[79]

All HAL ships have a dark blue hull with white superstructure, with the company's logo featured prominently on the functional smoke stacks.

On October 26, 2012, it was announced that a memorandum of agreement had been signed with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of a 2,660-passenger ship for Holland America Line scheduled for delivery in spring 2016. Koningsdam, which became a new class of ship for the line (The Pinnacle Class), and the first new Holland America ship since Nieuw Amsterdam, delivered in 2010. Also noted was that the addition of new ships would maintain passenger capacity if some of the older Carnival Corporation ships are sold.[81]

The Holland America Group of HAL and Princess Cruises have a letter of understanding to buy the White Pass and Yukon Route between Skagway, Alaska and the US-Canadian border. The purchase closed July 31, 2018.

On July 15, 2020, it was announced by Holland America that Maasdam, Veendam, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam were sold to two undisclosed buyers. The ships were sold in pairs, with the Maasdam and Veendam transferring to one company in August 2020, while the Amsterdam and Rotterdam moved to another company in fall 2020. One pair went to a new cruise brand and the other to an existing brand.[82]

Most cruise lines suspended their sailings because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.[83] As of January 6, 2021, all Holland America sailings were cancelled to at least April 30, 2021, according to an industry news item. That report listed no specific sailings for Holland America prior to the first week of June 2021.[84]

In October 2023, Holland America announced that it was about halfway through converting its fleet Wi-Fi to Starlink. The cruise line also announced that it expected to have Starlink fully operational across its entire fleet by mid-December 2023.[85] With the move, Holland America joined its sister-brands in Carnival Corporation & plc, including Princess Cruises and Cunard Line.[86]

Rotterdam class (R class)
Holland America Line's R-class ships did not all start out with identical layouts. Rotterdam, the first of the four, was similar to the previous S class, but slightly longer and wider, with a third set of passenger stairs/elevators, twin funnels, and some new facilities. The twin sister ships Volendam and Zaandam followed, similar to Rotterdam, but with a different (single) funnel and larger because the aft pool was moved up one deck to the Lido level, creating more space for passenger accommodations below. The final R-class ship, Amsterdam, like a hybrid of Rotterdam and Volendam/Zaandam, incorporates Rotterdam's twin funnels as well as the Lido deck aft pool. Together, Rotterdam and Amsterdam were considered HAL's flagships.[citation needed] On July 15, 2020, it was announced by Holland America that MS Rotterdam and MS Amsterdam were sold to undisclosed buyers. The ships were sold as a pair, with the two joining an existing cruise brand in fall 2020.[82] It was further announced on the same day, that this pair would join Fred. Olsen Cruise Line.[82]

Vista class (V class)
HAL's four Vista-class ships are named for the points of the compass in Dutch. Noord for north, Zuid for south, Oost for east and West for West. These ships were designed mainly for shorter (less than two weeks) cruises in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe. These ships are notable because of the exceptionally great number of oceanview and verandah staterooms - more than 85% and 67% respectively. The first three Vista-class ships were built as identical triplets. Noordam incorporated a few design changes, including a more vertical aft profile, which makes her larger, with a slightly greater passenger capacity. The success of Noordam's revised design caused HAL to modify the other three Vista-class ships with aft expansions to mimic Noordam.[citation needed] In 2006, the Vista-class cruise ships were awarded the 2006 Green Planet Award for outstanding environmental standards by Kuoni Switzerland.[87] Zuiderdam, Oosterdam and Westerdam received the first phase of the line's Signature of Excellence upgrades between 2005 and 2006, while Noordam was built to SOE1 standards.[citation needed]

Signature class
The Signature-class ships are essentially an enhanced Vista-class design. The main difference is the addition of a deck between the Lido and Observation decks. This allows for more cabins (mostly spa accommodations) and some additional facilities including the specialty restaurant, Tamarind, and the Silk Den lounge.[citation needed] Both Signature-class ships were built to the line's Signature of Excellence (first phase) standards.[citation needed]

Pinnacle class
Constructed at the Fincantieri shipyards, Koningsdam is the largest ship to be built for Holland-America, and is the size of the ex-Ryndam and ex-Statendam joined.[81] The new ship has a beam of 35 metres (114 ft 10 in), complying with the New Panamax dimensions and allowing it to cruise through the new wider locks currently under construction at the Panama Canal.
